H2APS: A New Lighter-Than-Air Pseudo-Satellite Concept

H2APS is an innovative project that aims to develop a new lighter-than-air high-altitude pseudo-satellite platform. This platform will be designed to operate in the stratosphere for long periods of time and will be more cost-effective than traditional satellites.

H2APS will use a combination of technologies to achieve its goal, including:

Hydrogen: Hydrogen will be used to lift the platform to the stratosphere and as a backup power system.

Composite materials: The platform will be constructed from lightweight and strong composite materials.

Autonomous control systems: The platform will be equipped with autonomous control systems that will allow it to maintain its position and perform assigned tasks.

H2APS will have a wide range of potential applications, including:

Communications: The platform can be used to provide communications services to remote or underserved areas.

Surveillance: The platform can be used to monitor the environment or critical infrastructure.

Science: The platform can be used to conduct scientific research in the stratosphere.

H2APS will offer a number of benefits over traditional satellites, including:

The H2APS project is being developed by a consortium of Spanish companies and institutions, led by CITD Engineering & Technologies. The project is funded by the Center for Industrial Technological Development (CDTI) of the Ministry of Science and Innovation.

cryogenic hydrogen tanks for zero-emission aircraft

The Ministry of Industry, Trade and Tourism (MINCOTUR) 

The Ministry of Industry, Trade and Tourism (MINCOTUR) has announced the granting of a €2.5 million subsidy to a consortium led by the company CITD and also composed of the companies PROSIX, KING MARINE and SUPRASYS for the development of cryogenic hydrogen tanks for zero-emission aircraft, in which Prosix together with King Marine make all manufacturing possible.

The project, called TANKZZERO, has the main objective of raising the maturity level of the cryogenic hydrogen tank concept in carbon fibre reinforced composite material for commercial aviation.

This cryogenic hydrogen storage tank concept has been developed thanks to the 2021 Aeronautical Technology Plan in the “ZERO” project in a consortium led by Airbus where CITD has participated in defining the tank structure reaching TRL2-3.

TANK2ZERO seeks to demonstrate the viability of the CFRP cryogenic tank solution by investigating and identifying solutions to the open points identified in the previous phase. Study the use of liquid hydrogen at cryogenic temperatures in commercial aviation.

The project is financed under the Aeronautical Technology Program (PTAP), subsidized by the CDTI in the 2023 call, through the Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan, with funds provided by the European Union through the Next Generation program.

In general, the development of technology for zero-emission aircraft is a rapidly growing field of research. This technology is expected to have a significant impact on the aviation industry in the coming years.
